A member of a wealthy family of French entrepreneurs who moved to Piedmont to escape the persecution against the Huguenots, Guido Rey was related to the Sella family whose footsteps he followed both as a alpinist (a new route on Monte Rosa bears his name) and as a photographer. The two works in the auction show the two passions that accompanied him through his life: the photo-mountaineering one shows Mount Matterhorn, which he himself climbed five times - "La lettera" on the other hand, shows his passion for the portrait. It belongs to a series of tableaux vivantes, where he asked his subjects to act as if they were to pose for a painting. An exponent of pictorialist photography, he was the only Italian to be published in the famous American magazine directed by Alfred Stieglitz "Camera Work" with two works, "La Lettera" and "A Flemish Interior," both from 1908. The fact that this is a photogravure, a very high quality letterpress print, suggests that it was taken from the series made to be included in the copies of the magazine.
