An intellectual, a magistrate capable of not applying the racial laws during Fascism (a regime he fought during the Resistance) and then of writing resounding judgments, such as the one that recognized divorce when it was still forbidden in Italy, Domenico Riccardo Peretti Griva became a leading exponent of pictorialism and of straight photography, following the path traced by a master like Alfred Stieglitz. Comparing "Nevica" and "Winter on Fifth Avenue," which the American photographer shot in 1893, the similarities between the two works are evident, as well as Peretti Griva's refined bromolio technique.
