It was at the beginning of the 1950s that Renzo Tortelli approached photography, attending the CCF founded by Luigi Crocenzi in Fermo, the Milanese club La Bussola and the Misa in Senigallia, where he met Giuseppe Cavalli, Ferruccio Ferroni and Mario Giacomelli, with whom he established an association that would lead them to produce one of the works that have remained in the history of Italian photography in 1957 in Scanno. A friend of important artists such as Domenico Cantatore and the futurist Sante Monachesi, whose works he documented from 1961 (the year of his first personal exhibition at the Circolo Fotografico Milanese), he was the protagonist of an intense exhibition activity.
