Having established himself as a simple enthusiast in his native Hungary, André Kertész decided to try his luck in Paris where he moved, coming in contact with other outcasts from his country such as Brassai, with whom he formed a strong professional understanding and with the environment that would later be defined as that of the photographie humaniste. He moved with his wife, who had followed him to France, to the United States. He struggled to confirm the same successes - he would achieve them years later - because the Americans found it hard to understand, they who loved long reportages, the refinement of an author who expressed himself best in the synthesis of a single photograph. This small portfolio gives a good idea of the dry, linear, cultured style that characterised him.
