For a long time the Shroud, the controversial sheet presented as the original shroud of Jesus Christ's body, was described in words, honored for its supposed sacredness, reproduced in drawings, observed at public outreaches. Everything changed with the advent of photography: it was the Piedmontese Secondo Pia in 1898 who first photographed it in an elaborate session where lighting bulbs were used for one of the first times. In 1931, at that year's extension, another Piedmontese, Giuseppe Enrie, was able to photograph the sheet without the obstacle of the shrine preserving it. Interestingly, it all took place inside the Turin Cathedral where a darkroom had also been set up. Even in this second case, the photographers pointed out that the object has the characteristics of a photographic negative.
