When in the late 1980s the great photojournalist and engagé journalist Ferdinando Scianna decided, following in the footsteps of his friend Frank Horvat, to enter the world of fashion, there were many were left astonished and perhaps turned up their noses. Called by the then emerging fashion brand Dolce and Gabbana to represent its style, the Sicilian photographer began an extraordinary partnership with the very young Dutch model Marpessa Hennink, shooting her in Mediterranean atmospheres full of a mysterious and sensual charm in continuous balance between reality and fiction, archaism and modernity.
