Provenance
The Giulietta model series was really lucky. Introduced for the first time in 1955, it was seen by the press as a true miracle: it was the Gran Turismo that became the symbol of the renaissance of Italian Economy, able to unite power and daily usability with ease of maintenance. Curiously presented on the market at first as an elegant coupé and then as a saloon, the Giulietta quickly became Italy's Fiancée, thanks to its beauty and benchmark performance. Immediately, gentlemen drivers begun to appreciate and take advantage of its fantastic handling that, thanks to the great power of the engine, allowed this car to dominate the 1300cc class in the Tourism category, in European sportscars championships. With the Giulietta, the "speed craze" became contagious, starting with the work of some excellent specialists, such as Conrero and Facetti, to then evolve into the beautiful creations of Zagato and Bertone coachbuilders. The race for the 200 km/h had begun: Alfa Romeo’ engineers started a series of studies to get the maximum potential out of a series-derived motorcar. In 1957, Alfa Romeo decided to introduce a really special, yet production model: the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, characterized by a special aerodynamic body. Franco Scaglione, thanks to the studies and the experience gathered with the B.A.T. berlinettas, was able to draw a streamlined bodywork, characterized by a low and sharp nose. Assembled on the short wheel base chassis of the Giulietta Spider, it had a cx of just 0,28, allowing the SS to reach the magical 200 km/h threshold; a cx that has not been bettered for more than twenty years. The definitive production version, type 101.20, had steel doors but kept the aluminium bonnets of the first cars; compared to these, the front "nose" was higher, front and rear bumpers were fitted and there was a, although minimal, sound insulation. The twin-cam engine was in its most thrusting version, with about 100 hp. The Giulietta Sprint Speciale remained in production until 1962, when it was replaced by the Giulia Sprint Speciale, which remained in production until 1965.
The car
The 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, chassis no. AR 101.20* 00687*, was completely restored, not recently, and is presented in outstanding condition. The bodywork is beautifully painted in the traditional red colour of the sporty Alfa Romeos. Inside, the seat and panel upholstery are practically perfect, in grey fabric and red leatherette, with leather straps for luggage. The roof lining, preserved, shows no tears. In the dashboard, the complete original Veglia instrumentation. All details and chrome are in excellent condition. The steering wheel has the peculiarity of the double push-button in the centre: for the flashing headlights and for the horn. At the wheel, the exuberant performance and the generosity of the (all in all) small engine are impressive. The speed that can be reached is almost unbelievable, for a production 1300 cc of the era, but is particularly striking the remarkable road holding and the agility given by the short wheelbase. Even the brakes, although with four drums, but of generous dimensions and finned, are effective. The 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, chassis no. AR 101.20*00687*, is at its second registration; born with Turin plates, since 1982 it has been Padova plated. Provided with ASI certification, registered in the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo, it is complete with a correct engine and exhaustive documentation on its past.
State of the art
