L'opera è corredata da una lettera della dottoressa Arabella Cifani, datata 20 maggio 2018. Secondo la studiosa, il dipinto, di cui sono note altre versioni, è databile intorno al 1700 per l'impiego di una tavolozza dai toni più chiari, mentre il pastore, dai tratti fortemente caratterizzati, potrebbe essere un autoritratto del pittore sulla base di un confronto con un dipinto già in collezione di Italo Faldi (cfr. S. Marra, scheda n. 23, in Artisti a Roma. Ritratti di pittori, scultori e architetti dal Rinascimento al Neoclassicismo, catalogo della mostra a cura di F. Petrucci e A. Donati, Roma 2008).
