Among the Neapolitan ruins painters of the 18th century, Leonardo Coccorante is certainly the best known. The painting offered in the lot is by his teacher, Angelo Maria Costa (1670–1721), a painter from Palermo of views and ruins, documented in Naples since 1696.
Coccorante's years of apprenticeship emerge in the similarities of style and composition existing among his paintings and the few known ruins of Costa, including this painting, signed by the artist with the monogram AC, on the base of the pillar on the right.
Paintings and perspectives by Costa were part of all the main Neapolitan collections, including Pignatelli, as reported by Gerard Lebrot in his "Collections of painting in Neaples 1600-1780".
As a painter of views he distinguished himself for his paintings with real shots, rich in detail, of the city of Naples.
