Literature

La mano italiana "2". Disegni di tre secoli, catalog of the exhibition of the W. Apolloni Gallery edited by G. Sestieri, Rome 1984, cat. 14.
The drawing is very likely Carlo Maratti's first idea for the altarpiece of the Certosa di San Martino in Naples, according to Stella Rudolph's opinion reported in a catalogue entry of the Apolloni Gallery. The arrangement of Christ and that of the Baptist in the drawing are very similar in the Neapolitan painting, which began around 1705 and was finished in 1710 by the pupils. The repeated and suffered stroke in the sheet is typical of the maturity of Maratti.
