Round, rifled, 18 mm cal. barrel at the nozzle, with octagonal breech (some pitting inside and signs of use, especially at the nozzle, clean bore, visible rifling), featuring crowned "T" and "M", "M" within a circle, "MI" and dated "M 1853", numbered "91", provided with foresight, club guide and folding and adjustable rear sight. Tang marked "M.le 1853". Backward spring lock with marking of the Mutzig imperial manufacture and with crowned "G" mark . Working mechanism. Long, wooden stock with remains of stamps on the butt-stock and remains of coeval numbering on the barrel. Iron mounts. Butt plate marked "11" with marks within a shield including "G" and with screw featuring a small circle. Iron ramrod. The markings and the dotted screw suggest that it was used by the troops of the Papal States. The French 1853 model carbine was used by the Papal Gunners.
