Specialist Notes

In thispage the virtuosity of the screenplay and of its very structure plays afundamental role. Valentina is in the throes of a fit of jealousy and falls onthe sharp rocks of the Istrian coast. Crepax represents this fall in threevignettes which are as many segments of a square. Hence, the protagonist'snervousness is also reflected in the cuts that characterize the page structure.Furthermore, the way in which the author represents the environment thatsurrounds the characters appears symbolic, with a dirty, stony and very strongsign as if to reaffirm that nature does not care about these insignificantproblems of mere mortals. A reflection that Crepax himself had made during oneof his rare holidays abroad, when he joined his friends Umberto Eco and EugenioCarmi to spend two weeks at sea in Croatia with their respective families.
