Specialist Notes
Embellishedwith a phantom relationship between Corto Maltese and Valentina's grandmother(given the different times in which these characters live in the fiction), atrick that Crepax had devised with Hugo Pratt to bring the two characterstogether, this story is fully part of those of the author where very littlehappens and everything is entrusted to the atmosphere, dreams and visions ofthe protagonists and to the recurrence of unresolved traumas (such as thoserelated to the Undergrounds). In this page, the fleeting embrace betweenValentina and Phil Rembrandt is told in a sequence made up of a myriad ofmoments and details. There are 16 cartoons of different sizes and shapes thatsuggest their symbolic value and reading time, some very small and apparentlyuseless. But, as Umberto Eco rightly observed, sometimes a cartoon must simplysuggest the presence of a temporal pause between one moment and another in ascene.
