An interesting John Dickson & son underlever double-barreled shotgun with Sutherland Clan motto

length 110,5 cm.
Smoothbore, damask, barrels, 16 gauge barrels, provided with rib marked ‘JOHN DICKSON & SON 63 PRINCES STREET EDIMBURGH’ and ‘1’, with white metal foresight. The extractor marked ‘1’. In the lower part are marks of the Bimingham test bench, mark ‘16’, stamp ‘J.D&S’ and numbers. Mirror bores, the cartridge chambers with minimal signs. Fine browning (refreshed?). Receiver finely engraved with racemes and hollow segments inside to lighten it, with marks matching at the barrels and Birmingham stamps. The dorsal tang with small broad sight numbered ‘1’. Key with rotary underlever. Lock engraved en suite and signed ‘JOHN DICKSON & SON’, with rebound hammers. Fore-end and butt made of fine marbled wood, the former fully knurled and numbered ‘1’ to the cross; the latter knurled at the base. The butt plate in one piece with the butt, reinforced at both ends by iron plates engraved like the other parts. Grip with pressure safety at the trigger guard. Serial number matching on barrels and trigger guard. Remains of finishing (casehardening?) on the iron parts. At the bottom of the butt-plate is an engraved silver shield featuring the emblem of a lion rampant surmounted by the cartouche ‘SANS PEUR’ and above it the effige of an cavalry order, probably the Order of the Bath. In a period, briefcase-shaped wooden case (not coeval), provided with a few accessories.
