Curved, single-and short false-edged blade (strong pitting at the tip, the rest of the blade in better condition); the faces with fuller and grooved next to the back. The blade engraved for two-thirds. On the right side, trophies of arms, shields and flags, the American eagle surmounted by the shield and cartouche with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", at the forte the signature "W. H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia". On the left side, trophies and flower patterns surrounding the inscription "U.S." Gilt bronze mounts, similar to the French model, with partially pierced guard worked with racemes. Short cap with oak branches. Grip covered with fish skin with brass wire binding. Leather scabbard (heavily worn and slightly short, probably shrunken). Bronze-coloured metal mounts with remains of gilding; cap (detached) with dedication "Presented to 1st Lieutenat J.D. Cadigan BY Captain D.J. Hogan Boston, July 18th 1854".
