Round, rifled, 54 cal. barrel with square breech marked "USN" on the back and with remains of other markings (not clearly legible). Bore with visible rifling, pitting inside. Sliding bolt with opening lever on the back. Percussion breech-loading mechanism. "Mule Ear" with nipple, rim-fie hammer on one side. Plate marked "W.M. JENKS" and "N.P. AMES SPRINGFIELD MASS.". Working mechanism. Wooden walnut stock (normally it is not provided with the bayonet slot, yet in this case the slot was hollowed out - handcrafted? - and then was filled, probably later, with coloured wax), featuring on the left side remains of two military control stamps. Brass mounts. Butt plate stamped "R".
