A magnificent gift to H.H. Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903) from the Order of Preachers De La Provincia Del Santissimo Rosario De Filipinas on the occasion of his priestly jubilee in 1887. An extraordinary ivory statue representing Saint Thomas Aquinas, priest and Doctor of the Church (1225-1274), seated in an armchair, holding a pen and paper in his hands, with his right foot resting on the back of Medusa, who desperately holds a book in her hands. The whole is set on an oval base with inscriptions on all four sides. On the obverse, a medallion with the text "A SU SANTIDAD LEON XIII - EN SU JUBILEO SACERDOTAL" (1837-1887). On the reverse, another medallion with a biblical scene in bas-relief and the inscription "PROUINCIA DEL SMO ROSARIO DE FILIPINAS", on the sides "S. THOMAM PATRONUM DECLARAMUS SCHOLARUM CATHOLICARUM. CUM HOC SIT" (the inscription also refers to the brief letter of 4 August 1880 "CUM HOC SIT" in which Thomas Aquinas was named Patron of the Catholic Schools of the Apostolic See). On the opposite side "RATIO AD HUMANUM FASTIGIUM THOM AE PENNIS EVECTA. JAM PERE NEQUIT SUBLIMIUS ASSURGERE. AE TERN. PATR.". Rosewood base carved with foliate spirals (damaged parts and cracks) on fourpod with ivory balls.
