Specialist Notes
First edition. Extremely rare first issue of the "gallant collection" published by Documento(Federigo Valli), directed anonymously by Enrico Falqui, whose erudition was responsible for the choice and care of the texts. Only two titles were published, each of which was printed in just 105 non-commercial copies, numbered by machine and accompanied by original plates. The first cultured repechage concerns four of the forty-four short stories signed by the mysterious Sienese writer Gentile Sermini, who lived in the fifteenth century; as the little note in the colophon indicates, Sermini was printed for the first time by Vigo of Livorno in 1874; then by Alberto Colini for Carabba of Lanciano in 1911. Who knows whether the panning of Sermini in the very fascist Treccani, by Giulio Reichenbach (volume of 1936), had some influence on Falqui's choice. The artist chosen for the illustrations is Alberto Savinio, who draws five delightful vignettes (one for the cover, the rest as initials for each story) in addition to the only four known etchings of his not very voluminous engraving activity. The theme is naturally erotic, and the "bestiary" of nudes set up by the artist is truly remarkable.
