Specialist Notes

Mauro d'Arcano was among the protagonists of the so-called Accademia dei Vignaiuoli, born in Rome at the beginning of the thirties around the Mantuan gentleman Uberto Strozzi. This group of poets included Francesco Berni, Francesco Maria Molza, Giovanni Della Casa, Lelio Capilupi, etc.
Mauro contested Berni's primacy in burlesque poetry, constructing his chapters with a simple and often decidedly obscene language: compared to Berni's chapters, his compositions show a tendency towards verbosity, digressions and personal notations. Mauro's 21 burlesque chapters in terza rima remain, probably composed between the beginning of the thirties and 1535. In his production we find Priapic verses ( Chapters of the bean, Chapter in praise of Priapus ), paradoxical chapters ( Of lies, Of the famine ) and epistolary chapters ( Of the journey to Rome to the Duke of Malfi, To messer Ruberto Strozzi). In 1538 the same Navò published a new edition (the one offered here), Tutte le terza rime del Mauro , which attributed 22 compositions to M.
