How bidding works

Information

Venice: for miser Bernardino Stagnino from Trino de Monferra, 1520 adi XXVIII March. In 4°. Title page in red and black, in the centre image of St. Bernardino of Siena with radiant disk with Christ's monogram IHS and three mitres around, within a woodcut frame, woodcut illustrations at the beginning of each canto, marginal browning but overall an excellent example, CONTEMPORARY VENETIAN BINDING WITH DRY IMPRESSIONS AND GOLD DECORATIONS, GILT AND EMBOSSED CUTS , clasps and laces, small defects and losses on the spine and covers, traces of abrasion on the title page, slight marginal stains. Sheets on the back covers with sixteenth-century writing.

Specialist Notes

This is Stagnino's second Dante quarto edition (the first was in 1512), which contains only the Comedy and uses the same plates. The commentary is by Landino and the text is based on that of the Aldine edition established by Bembo; on the frontispiece we can even read that the text is now printed in italics (following Aldus, but this is an innovation for the larger-format editions). Literally: "in littera cursiva impresse".
Mambelli, 27.
