Specialist Notes

In 1752 Lancellotti published the text of Dante's Comedy with Serassi. The edition recalls sixteenth-century models in format, characters and mise en page. The choice falls on the revival of the 'handbook', the poetic text is contained in a single volume in 12° (140×80 mm) of 640 pages. The frontispiece features a woodcut of a winged cherub, one of the three known typographic devices of Pietro Lancellotti, the pages are decorated with woodcut capital letters, the text is arranged in a column. The text of the Comedy, which repeats the commentary by Lodovico Dolce that appeared for the first time in the Giolitina edition of 1555, includes a selection of ancient and modern commentaries (from Giovanni Boccaccio to Gian Vincenzo Gravina). Serassi, in the dedication to the young Girolamo Sottocasa, declares that he revised and expanded the editions of the Crusca (1595) and the notes of Dolce thanks to the consultation of a "very ancient" Codex belonging to Monsignor Albani, archdeacon of the Cathedral of Bergamo.
