Bologna, Gio. Recaldini, 1673. In 8°. With numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut initials and decorations, browning on some leaves, occasional foxing. Binding in contemporary full soft parchment, manuscript title on the spine, defects on the upper cap.

Specialist Notes

Famous treatise on physiognomy published in 1630 and a source of respect for the physiognomic studies conducted by Johann Caspar Lavater in the 18th century. Cornelio Ghirardelli (Bologna c.ca 1572-1637), was a great Italian astronomer and astrologer, father of the Order of the Franciscans Minorites and member of the Accademia dei Vespertini where astronomy, astrology and mathematics were discussed. In this important work divided into 10 deca, in turn divided into ten discourses, it deals with different characteristics of the face and head, the last discourse of each deca is dedicated to female types.
