Specialist Notes

A very rare work, and difficult to collate; as Marini also observes, «the series of editions of this military writer is a little confused». The treatise, the work of the Novara engineer who fortified Sabbioneta for Vespasiano Gonzaga, was continually revised and expanded by its Author; composed of only two books in the first edition of 1564 (the Opera nuova di fortifying and the Trattato degli essamini de' Bombardieri), it was increased by one book in the subsequent printing of 1567 (Tavole brevissime...), then «in 1571 the three aforementioned books were reprinted in Brescia in 4° with additions and corrections by the author, who in the same year and sixth published two more, namely: Nuovo ragione di fabbricare le forzze [...] and Modo di forme con prestezza le moderna battaglia...». Our copy, which corresponds but not perfectly to that described by D'Ayala 15, contains all five of the above books, but the first book - which constitutes the first of the three parts of the Military Art - is missing 7 cards; see also Marini 22.
