Specialist Notes

Second edition of one of the most important civil engineering works of the 18th century, dedicated to the work machines designed by the inventor, engineer and master bricklayer Nicola Zabaglia (1664-1750). The plates, engraved by the best Roman carvers, including Giuseppe Vasi and Alessandro Specchi, based on drawings by Carlo Fontana and Francesco Rostagni, all present a very high quality of drawing, with realistic and documentary intentions. In addition to the description, with related engravings, of the works carried out by D. Fontana for the transport of the Obelisk located in Piazza S. Pietro, three famous plates depict wooden element and extension staircases used in S. Pietro by the " festajoli" on ceremonial occasions. The textual part opens with the life and works of Nicola Zabaglia, followed by an analytical description of the content of each table. Some plates in our example are repeated several times, for a total of 68 pieces.
