Specialist Notes

Third edition of Serlio's Works. Gamba, 1644-45: “It is a reprint of an edition, although less extensive, made in Venice, Eredi di Francesco de' Franceschi, 1600, in 4°, and has the same plates, except that they are much more worn. This reprint is useful and convenient for artists; but it was carried out against the will of Serlio, who wanted all his editions to be made not in 4° but in folio, with engravings by intelligent and tasteful artists, [...] The Author's elocution is tolerable and, as for the theories of art, Serlio cannot be separated from Palladio, Rusconi, Barozzi da Vignola, Cataneo...". Brunet V, 305.
