Specialist Notes

Nicola Fortunato (Giffoni Valle Piana, 1720 - Naples after 1771) like his teacher Genovesi and other Neapolitan economists, including Abbot Galiani, adhered to the economic policy desired by Bernardo Tanucci who was involved in a strong conflict with the baronial class. The reformist movement believed that the nobility's prejudice towards trade was useless and that it was essential that the "useful" population had to increase compared to the "useless" population in order to regenerate the economic life of the kingdom. These ideas of his, clearly set out in his most important work "Reflections on Commerce", show a clear knowledge of the serious problems existing in the provinces of the kingdom.
