Specialist Notes

An absolute masterpiece of twentieth-century Italian graphic art. This poem steeped in D'Annunzio poetics was written and profusely illustrated by Sartorio with relief zincographies and published in 1922 by Cozzani's Eroica, after a ten-year gestation: Sartorio had begun the preparation of the plates in 1912 and «a part was first published in magazine L'Eroica (in the years 1913-14) where Cozzani explains the technique adopted by the artist to execute the plates, engraved on zinc rather than on wood, but with the system of relief engraving with a xylographic effect" (Bianco e Nero, 133 ).
