Specialist Notes

SPLENDID COMPLETE EXAMPLE OF THE FAMOUS SERIES OF 12 PLATES DEDICATED TO ITALIAN MASKS, engraved by Reidel on DRAWINGS OF BRUNELLEESCHI. They depict characters from the Commedia dell'Arte: Scaramouche, Tartaglia, Arlequin, Pantalone, Trivellino, Rosauro, Docteur Ballanzone, Brighella, Mezzetin et Colombine, Coralline, Florindo and Giacometta. The colorful costumed characters are represented in the foreground on imaginative sets with scenarios of luxurious Florentine palaces and gardens. It is an early work by the Italian painter and set designer Umberto Brunelleschi (1879 1949), also known for his illustrations in the Gazette du Bon Ton and in the Journal des Dames et des Modes i>.
