Specialist Notes
"La Pescara (Milan 1550) shows an example of virtuous friendship between two young Romans, Lucio and Curzio. (...) As explicitly stated by the author, the work is intended to be a "serious comedy", where the teaching relies above all on the pathetic tones with which the contrast between love and friendship is presented, the heroism of young people who prefer to sacrifice themselves rather than fail in mutual affection. And it is precisely this duplicity of plans, between moralistic-pathetic intentions and "comic" depiction of an unscrupulous urban environment, which seriously threatens the unity of the style, while, on the other hand, the heavy recourse to the Plautine source only sclerotizes, more than it moralizes, the characters of the work.
