Two frontispieces, one in Italian and one in Latin with a vignette of the papal arms, 79 plates, 1 double page, 9 folded, and the others full page, all designed and signed by Carlo Fontana and engraved by Alessandro Specchi, scattered flourishes and light browning on several cards, slight defects on the edges of the folded cards.
Original edition of this powerful work by Carlo Fontana (1634-1714). The work is divided into 7 books: the first deals with the ancient site of St. Peter; the II the basilica built by the emperor Constantine in around 320; the third book reports the transport of the obelisk in 1585 and its erection in St. Peter's Square; on the IV the square and Bernini's colonnade; book V is a detailed study of the factory of S. Pietro; on the VI the cost of St. Peter compared with that of the Temple of Solomon.
