Specialist Notes

Eighteenth-century counterfeit of the famous Giunti edition called the Ventisettana, printed in 300 copies at the request of the English consul Smith, due to the rarity, already at the time, of the Giunti original. "Stefano Orlandelli executed with the Pasinello presses in Venice in the year 1729, at the expense of Salvatore Ferrari, a reprint in number (it is said) of 300 copies, with one on parchment. Of this reprint which is often incorrectly indicated as a counterfeit, the editor of the Decameron, 1761, offers a note of over 450 blunders..." Gamba 172, notes; Brunet I, 998-999.
