Specialist Notes

First two volumes of the valuable masterpiece by Anne Claude Philippe de Tubières, better known as Count of Caylus (Paris, 31 October 1692 – 5 September 1765), famous French archaeologist, painter and antiquarian. His private life and the erotic artistic taste that distinguished him were much discussed; he was the discoverer of phallic amulets and postribular paintings of the classical world, which gave a new aspect to the world of classical art. For his activities as a patron, he was recognized as an honorary member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1731 and subsequently, in 1742, also of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. Brunet, I, 1706 and III, 855.
