Specialist Notes

Rare example printed in Venice in 1524 containing the famous Alfonsine Tables, the first far-reaching astronomical work ever created in Christian Europe. Fruit of the studies of 50 astronomers gathered in Toledo in 1252 on behalf of the king of Castile and Léon Alfonso X with the aim of providing the position of the sun, planets and stars. They are to be understood as an update of the tables created by Ptolemy in the Almagest and a great pillar for astronomical history: Christopher Columbus used them for his travels and they were the basis of the training of Nicolaus Copernicus.
