Specialist Notes

First edition of the most important work on Syracuse.

Original edition, the only work by Mirabella that has survived to the present day and dedicated to the King of Spain Philip III. The volume contains nine plates engraved in Syracuse by Francesco Lomia, in which the city was meticulously reproduced, with information relating to more than two hundred public and private buildings, temples and fortifications, sacred places and gardens, obtained thanks to a systematic examination of the sources classic. At the end of the work the lives of Archimedes, Theocritus, Epicharmus and Tisias are inserted. The writing was an extraordinary success and was reprinted several times; the topographical plan it contained ended up representing the official image of the city, reproduced in numerous texts, in Italy and abroad.

This example was exhibited at the "Civiltà del seicento" exhibition held in Naples by 24 October 1984 to 14 April 1985. The work is accompanied by a topographical map of Syracuse, divided into nine tables which reports an accurate hypothetical reconstruction of the ancient city, from Ortigia to the Eurialo castle, with the indication of two hundred places of interest historical and archaeological. In the sector dedicated to Neapoli and the Latomie del Paradiso, Don Vincenzo Mirabella left to posterity the written testimony of Caravaggio's visit to the cave which today bears the name of Orecchio di Dionisio, and which was previously called "Grotta della Favella". See Mira II, page 84 "Scholarly and very rare work". Lozzi, 5182 (notes) "very sought after and rare book".
