The fame of Summonte (leaving aside a Manual divinorum officiorum of 1596 and an unpublished Sommario et brevi relatione degli Vescovi et Archibiscovi di Napoli, composed in 1598 and today in the National Library of Naples) is linked to the Historia della Città e Regno of Naples, the first volumes of which were published in Naples in 1601 and 1602. In the main edition, edited between 1601-2 and 1640-43, the material is distributed in 4 volumes, of which the first covers the origins and archeology of Naples, with an aim of a 'Plinian' type, aimed at presenting the mirabilia urbis and the Neapolitan institutions; the second volume deals with the period between 1127 and 1442; the III covers the crucial period between 1442 and 1500, and then concludes the discussion, in the IV, of the Spanish period from 1501 to the revolts of 1585.
