Specialist Notes

The "régiment des gardes françaises" was an infantry regiment of the House of the King of France created in 1560 by Catherine de Medici to guard the King. During the French Revolution, the regiment was dismissed by the king after siding with the revolutionaries. The soldiers and officers then became part of the Paris National Guard, which formed the 102nd, 103rd and 104th infantry regiments, the 13th and 14th chasseur battalions, and the 29th and 30th division of the national foot gendarmerie.
