Specialist Notes

Charles Le Monnier (Paris, 1715 – Bayeux, 1799) French astronomer and geophysicist. A tireless observer, he advanced the practice of astronomical and geodetic measurement in France. Louis XV's esteem allowed him to procure the best equipment for his studies, mostly built in England. He also actively participated in the dissemination of the works of his English colleagues, in particular those of John Flamsteed and Isaac Newton. Several initiatives and many notable results are attributed to him: an investigation into anomalies of Jupiter and Saturn, the results of which were confirmed and used by Euler in his essay of 1748; a series of observations on the Moon, which lasted for over 15 years; various research on terrestrial magnetism and atmospheric electricity; The identification and location of large numbers of fixed stars; a very complete exposition of the analytical theory of gravitation, which Le Monnier gave in the course of his lectures at the "College of France"; a dozen observations of an apparent fifth-magnitude star, before it was officially discovered by William Herschel in 1781 and later identified as the planet Uranus; the determination of changes in the Earth's atmospheric refraction in summer and winter; the reformulation of the Solar Tables. "Histoire celeste..." is his first work.
