Specialist Notes

After his unfortunate adventure in Courland, Maurice de Saxe (1696-1750), natural son of the king of Poland, dedicated himself from December 1732 to writing his Rêveries. The author was a philosopher, but above all a psychologist for whom "the knowledge of the human heart is the principle of military art" (Léonard, L'Armée et ses problèmes au XVIIIe siècle, p. 123). In the first part, Marshal de Saxe, armed wing of the reign of Louis XV, reviews all the "details" and aspects necessary to master military science, from recruitment to discipline, from uniforms to food, in a clear and understandable. The work concludes with "the qualities that an army general must have" and with some curious reflections on the propagation of the human species, aimed at counterbalancing the art of destroying populations.
