Specialist Notes

I manuscript: Girolamo Michieli was a Venetian patrician who lived in the mid-17th century, ascribed to the Noble Council of the city of Trogir in Dalmatia in 1659. The mss aims to establish "What crime really is. Crime it is a matter that embraces and includes all types of crimes, and all types of punishments due to criminals with the competent amendments...". Really interesting because it is full of cases and situations.
The manuscript: First-hand testimony relating to a crucial period in our history; a direct witness of the two-year period 1943-'45 records punctually and daily the activities of the Spiritual Assistance Office, also describing with images and documents of the time, the dramatic situation of those days. The purpose is declared ad incipit: "Chiosa: these are weapons and vicissitudes that are worth nothing before our homeland, Italy, because they were not included in my enrollment sheets. Will they be valid before God? The arduous sentence for posterity!". The narrative of the Liberation in Milan is evocative.
"May 1945: I saw the days of the Liberation of Milan. Shootings from the rooftops, in the streets. The Duce of Italy and his other comrades hanged by the legs - like calf quarters - to the hooks of a butcher's shop gutted by the bombing in Piazzale Loreto. Half-pale people shouting, men in civilian clothes with red or tricolor handkerchiefs around their necks, walking around grimly like the masters of Milan." And just a few days earlier, on April 28, he wrote: "I am tired and disappointed. Everything about what could be called Homeland-Italy has collapsed in me. Italians are vain and turbulent, talkative, always ready to sell themselves and to serve whoever is more pays them."
