Specialist Notes

The well-known Florentine writer and scholar Giovanbattista Gelli (1498 - 1563) held twelve Dante "readings" in Florence between 1541 and 1543 (almost all divided into various "lessons" and some preceded by an "oration") in this chronological order: Pd XXVI 124-138 (1541); Pg XVI 85-94 (1543); Pg XXVII 127-142 (1551); If I-XXV (nine readings, 1553-1563); Furthermore, two fragments remain on If XXVI 1-12 (1563). The three orations, each before the first three readings on the Inferno, aim to demonstrate "the excellence of D. above the other poets; that in Dante's Inferno the different qualities of sins are explained, and how man can avoid them cleanse; how D. with his poem brings us to the knowledge of our immortal life". This is the first of the published Readings and is dedicated to Giuseppe Bernardini, a merchant from Lucca.
