Folio, coat of arms of Federico Feltrio della Rovere, to whom the work is dedicated, engraved on the frontispiece, 8 cc. nn.; 278 cc. num., with numerous diagrams n.t. Printer's mark on the colophon. Light browning, slight foxing, small woodworm work on the upper internal margin. Full parchment binding, gusset with gold title on the spine, colored cuts.
Specialist Notes
The translation of Euclid carried out by Commandino (1509 – 1575), in addition to being the best result of his scientific production, is still considered the best sixteenth-century translation of Euclid's geometry. Born in Urbino in 1509, graduated in philosophy and medicine, Commandino was one of the great mathematicians of the 16th century, translating, in addition to Euclid, also the works of Archimedes, Apollonius Pergeus, Aristarchus, Ptolemy, etc., he contributed enormously to their diffusion. Geometry, which before Euclid was considered part of philosophy, acquired its own autonomy for the first time and, thanks also to translations into the vernacular, greater diffusion and practical application.
