Engraved illustrated frontispieces, fully illustrated with headers, drop caps, cul de lamps, and finely engraved copper plates in the text depicting coins, statues, medals, objects, even the text completely engraved, some slight foxing, coeval marbled calf binding, framed plates with double gilded frame, polychrome marbled endpapers, title and volume number within inserts on the spine with 5 raised bands, some peeling, small crack on the spine of the II vol., slight defects. Signature of belonging to the guard papers dated 1884.
Specialist Notes
First edition, in the first issue of the masterpiece of the typography of the century. XVIII, with chalcographic text and a rich iconographic apparatus engraved in copper by John Pine including: 2 vignettes on the title pages, 324 figures, vignettes and finials, 27 headers and 164 drop caps. This copy is part of the first edition of the first edition, as can be deduced from the wording on page. 108 of vol. II: the medallion bears the inscription "post est", which in the second issue was replaced with the correct "potest". Brunet III,320; Cohen-de Ricci 497: "Ouvrage très recherché, auquel il ne manque plus de connaissance de l'antique pour le dessin des medailles".
