Malpighi dissected the silkworm under the microscope with great skill and analyzed its intricate structure; before the appearance of this work it was believed that the silkworm had no internal organs. Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) was the first doctor of Pope Innocent XII and one of the great scientists of his time.
