Specialist Notes
Cesare Michelangelo was one of the most titled exponents of the d'Avalos, a family of Spanish origin who arrived in the Kingdom following Alfonso I of Aragon and distinguished over the centuries for its military valor and rapid rise to the top of the international scene, a faithful ally of the Habsburg dynasty in the centuries to come. With the Austrian arms in Naples, in 1713 Cesare Michelangelo returned to Vasto elevating it to the capital of his "State" where he built that restauratio imperii
which was the main driving force behind the decision to embrace the Habsburg cause. The palace of Vasto with the heraldic crests and standards, the rich and magnificent furnishings that off the spectacle of the superb picture gallery offers those who ask for an audience, evidence of a propensity for cultural investment; with the theater which sanctioned a noble sociality even in that provincial town; the impressive library that Cesare Michelangelo kept in the castle of Vasto is even more striking for its size and contents, with readings and texts that declare his attitude as a nobleman Renaissance inspired by the Machiavellian Prince. In this atmosphere, the publishing enterprise of 1714 was born and developed, which celebrates Magalotti's scientific genius in the present work.
