First rare edition of the famous history of France by Emili. The date, missing in the printed edition, can be deduced from a letter from Erasmus of Rotterdam to Budé (written in Antwerp in February 1516) in which the Dutch philosopher (who had previously been in contact with Emili in Paris) stated that he having learned of the publication of the work, also claiming to be certain that it was an excellent work, carried out by a learned and diligent man over the course of more than twenty years. Paolo Emili (Verona, circa 1460 - Paris, May 5, 1529) was an Italian humanist and historian. Arriving in Rome at a young age, he studied theology there and made himself known for his qualities as a humanist by Cardinal Charles II of Bourbon, following whom he moved to Paris in 1483, where he also frequented the court of Charles VIII. Louis XII ascended the throne in 1498, the bishop of Paris Étienne Ponchier commissioned him a history of the French monarchy from its origins to modern times, to which Emili dedicated the rest of his life. The first four books of De rebus gestis Francorum, comprising biographies from Faramondo to Philip I, were published in Paris in 1516; in 1519 two other books were released, in 1520 the seventh with the royal lives from Louis VIII to Philip III and in 1529 Emili completed the eighth and ninth book of the work, leaving the tenth unfinished, including biographies from Charles VI to Charles VIII , for the death that caught him on May 5th. He is buried in Notre Dame Cathedral.
