Specialist Notes

FIRST EDITION.
The delicate engravings of this work, Watt's most famous, offer today's viewers a very important testimony of English stately homes and the late eighteenth-century gardens that surrounded them. The etchings were made by Watts based on his own drawings and those of Indigo Jones and others. John Harris has shown that these views offer valuable contemporary evidence of each estate's architecture and gardens. These include two views of Chiswick House, Middlesex, seat of the Duke of Devonshire, another of Chatsworth, Derbyshire, modified by Lancelot Brown; Burghley House in Northamptonshire, seat of the Earl of Exeter, with Brown's modifications; Wilton House, seat of the Earl of Pembroke; Alnwick Castle, seat of the Duke of Northumberland; Charlton House in Wiltshire, seat of the Earl of Suffolk, designed by Indigo Jones; and many more.
