Basel, Heinrich Petri, 1540. In 2nd. Edited by Sebastian Munster. Text in Roman character and text arranged in 2 columns, 27 maps of the ancient world and 21 of the modern world for a total of 48 plates, double-page woodcut maps, text on the reverse of the plates within frames woodcuts, cartoons and diagrams in the text, the paper with the printer's brand missing, p.195, plate on p. 38 mutilation of half part, copy restored and reassembled, small evanescent stamps on 3 leaves, modern parchment binding.
Specialist Notes
Three maps refer to the Americas, the world map, the map of Schonlandia (Scandinavia), showing the "Terra nova sive de Bacalhos" in the upper left, and the "Novae Insulae XVII Nova Tabula ", the earliest known map showing the Americas as a separate continent; verso, account of Columbus's discoveries. All of this is in the world's first state map of Munster, marking and naming the Northwest Passage, while also naming northern North America.
