Paper manuscript of over 300 cc., 264 x 192 mm., written by a single hand in elegant chancellery, mid-18th century, coeval full parchment binding with title on the spine on a label.

THE PRECIOUS TRANSLATION OF DE RERUM NATURA BY MARCHETTI, in an excellent calligraphic copy.
Alessandro Marchetti (1633-1714), a man of science, as well as a talented man of letters: in fact he had a Galilean education, and was very close to the positions of that Pierre Gassendi who had tried to reconcile atomism and Christianity. Its translation into hendecasyllables - carried out between 1664 and 1668 - was a laborious operation, not only due to the complexity of the philosophical poetry of the Latin author, but also due to the need to "sweeten" the images of De rerum natura< /i>, perceived by the current mentality, still permeated by counter-reformist echoes, as more decidedly impious and materialistic. All this, as well as the posthumous printing in 1717 in non-Catholic London, did not however serve to avoid a peremptory decree of prohibition of the diffusion of the volume by the Index of Rome.
