Paris, Gruel & Engelmann, 1858. In 16th, pp. 794, text enclosed in elegant frames engraved on copper, with 33 plates, always engraved on copper and enclosed in frames, allegories of the main festivals that fall during the year. Contemporary BINDING from the workshop of LEON GRUEL (skilfully restored) in full brown leather; upper plate, rounded, decorated in relief with floral motifs and two angels supporting two bone cameos depicting historical scenes, all surmounted by a royal crown; lower plate decorated with a series of frames with geometric and floral motifs which enclose a biblical scene; colored cuts.
Splendid 19th century liturgy book which contains the various religious services of the Catholic rite on Sundays and public holidays of the year. While other 19th-century works on Catholic rites are available, few are as desirable as this edition by Englemann, especially for the charming engravings in the style of Albrecht Durer, the fine frames that adorn the text, and the artistic binding.
