Specialist Notes

Magnificent typographical enterprise, one of the five most significant productions by Giambattista Bodoni, printed in only 182 copies.

Contents: "Pars prima linguas Asiaticas complectens" with 43 exotic alphabets; "Pars secunda linguas Europeas complectens" with 51 exotic alphabets; "Pars tertia linguas Africanas complectens" with 3 exotic alphabets; "Pars quarta linguas Americanas complectens" without exotic alphabetics; follows "Index linguarum" in alphabetical order and finally the colophon. Among Bodoni's masterpieces for the variety of typographic essays, it presents the "Our Father" in 155 languages, impressed using a total of 97 exotic alphabets and for the other 58 versions using Latin characters, of which 23 italics.
One of the most interesting pages is the one that contains the Our Father in Chinese. For this Bodoni returned to his first form of printing, engraving the characters (based on those of Didot) in wood. They come out exceptionally clean, squared and clear. A fine copy with full margins with beards.
Brooks 1003: «. you can call it another Typographic Manual». DeLama II, p. 171-2: «a very precious book that makes history in the Typography».
